Robert Cory Bryar (born
December 31,
1979 in
Chicago,
Illinois) is the drummer for
My Chemical Romance. Bryar joined My Chemical Romance after former drummer
Matt Pelissier left the group abruptly while on tour in Japan in 2004.
Early career
Bryar began playing drums at age 4. He later became interested in jazz and orchestral percussion and considered attending college to study classical percussion. However after questioning the idea of formal classical training, Bryar began to play in local bands. Here he began imitating some of his favourite drummers such as
Neil Peart and
Dave Weckl. "I wanted to be in a band that would write songs, buy a van, and sell everything we owned to tour the country every day of the year. And it wouldn’t matter who we played with or where we played". After being unable to find a band that wanted to tour, Bob decided to quit music and went to Gainsville Florida to study and graduated with a degree in recording engineering.
My Chemical Romance
Bryar met My Chemical Romance while working as a sound technician with
The Used, through the help of MCR's manager and friend,
Brian Schechter. The group became casual friends but did not keep in touch once the mutual tour ended. Before a tour of Japan, while the band was struggling through some personal problems (one of these problems being
Gerard Way's road to sobriety), they dismissed their current drummer Matt Pelissier from the band. The exact reason is still not well known to the fanbase because, by quote of MCR, "They don't like to talk shit"[

Frank Iero (rhythm guitar, backing vocals) to say, "Bob and (lead guitarist Ray) Toro are the two hardest working people I've ever met, and if there is a God, I thank him everyday for bringing us Bob."[
